Self Portrait in Fur Coat (1500)
Albrecht Durer
Knob (1997) Gavin Turk
Damien Hirst and Maia Norman (1995)
Albrecht Durer's 'Self-Portrait in Fur Coat' (1500) shows a significant change in the way that the artist views and portrays himself.Research the paintings by Albrecht Durer, Gavin Turk and Damien Hirst in order to answer
the following questions;
1. Identify aspects of Durer's self portrait that show a changing view of the artist's view of himself as
an individual.
in Durer's self portrait there are a number of examples that portraits an artist view of himself as an individual for example he is wearing and alginate fury coat witch would be an expensive valuable to have in the 1500 this shows that he was a wealthy and important man,in the painting he is even painted his portrait touching his fur on the coat to show his pride in his possessions off ,another aspect in Durer's self portrait that portrays his vanity is his long luscious curly hair , Durer painted his hair using rich warm colors to portray his appearance as a well off good looking maintained man .
2. Explain how the artist's social status increased during the Renaissance period. Briefly explain why this happened.
in the 14 century the renaissance social status started to evolve when sculpture, architecture and painting formed a group that separated the side of mechanical arts. in the 15 century the knowledge of mathematical perspective, geometry and anatomy etc was expected by a painter in training .painting and sculpture is on a new basis due to the start of scientific methods of intellectual, theoretical and the literary . painters and sculptures could now claim that their profession required knowledge and intellectual ability. because of this science became more popular so there for scientific methods became more in use in art work.
3. Comment on Gavin Turk's work in relation to individualism, status of the artist and egotism.
the meaning of individualism is the habit or principle of being independent and self-reliant. the art work 'knob" by gavin turk's relates to individualism by the style of this painting .in the painting there is his signature in the center of a blank white canvas in rainbow colors, this relates to being independent and the signature represents himself as an individual .the rainbow colors makes his signature stand out and makes his name well notice this represents his egotism.
4. Comment on Damien Hirst's use of his work and the media for self promotion.
The photo of Daminen Hirst and Maia Norman is quiet and interesting piece .the media of this piece is rather abstract and pretty plain and simple but defiantly effective especially how his wife maia norman is wearing a outfit thats promoting his original piece .
5. Find 2 images of work by artists or designers that reflects some of the ideas of individualism,

De stijl 1917
a group of architects and designers formed a group in the early 1920s they were influenced by some of the ideas of DADA, they then formed a movement called de stijl which stands for "dutch for the style". The design era of de stijl was self promoted by designers and painters using the de stijl format on a wide range of different products such as shoes, chairs ,lamps to house designs .
6. How do you think artists and designers are viewed in Western society today?
i think today there is not much difference between the renaissance in how the western society works today ,artist and designers are ether making work because the have a passion for it or ether they are every day consumers who need to produce work to make a living .but how ever it has changed by how people go about there work and how they self promote it ,today artist and designers are getting commission from clients to create artworks. but to get commission from clients you gotta have a good rep and have the qualifications thats the only main difference from the western society till today.
