Week 2- Barbara Kruger & Mercantillism
Barbara Kruger's Art and Design
1. Describe the 'style' that Kruger has used in the two presented works.
The style that Barbara kruger has presented in these two designs is mainly
pop art ,but with in these two designs she has used the range of photography and graphic design. it looks as if barbara was going for the 60s pop art look .like most of barbaras work she uses a range of word collage with meaning full quotations, i believe this is how she expresses what she believes in life threw her art work .As you can tell from the text in the work shes quite a feminist artist . booth of the work are simple and dual but just threw the bold words and the black and white pictures you can end up with a very strong peace of work with meaning to it .
2. What are some of the concepts and messages that Kruger is communicating in them?
Consumerism, individual autonomy and desire are her main concepts in these images and the message is to think.
Her concept and message is to get you to question your need or desire to purchase or have ‘things’ and to question how it makes you feel. What does that satisfy both short and long term?
Do you need to purchase consumer goods to feel rich and beautiful? I think the bold message aims to guilt the viewer, which makes them think about their sense of reason.
3. Do these images communicate these ideas effectively? Explain your answer.
The images communicate these ideas clearly because the phrases are bold, direct and concise. They prompt you to question the ideas and your own motives.
4. Define the concept of Mercantillism and explain how these two examples can connect with the concept.
the concept of mercantilism was to "export over import", the purpose for this concept was to build a powerful and wealthy state by putting a limit on importation and to foster the growth of exportation to stimulate the country's economy .these two examples export and import connect with the theme of consumerism , which underlies the concept of mercantilism . The text in kruger's work "face it " is agreeing with the concept of mercantilism in how it is implies with the idea of restricting importation . the txt in face it "this luxurious garment wont make you rich or beautiful " this is also restricting importation and how these things ant really important in every day living .
5. Upload a more recent example of Kruger's work where she has used a new medium, that is not graphic design. Title your image of the chosen work and comment on your response to the work. How do you think the audience would experience this work?
"whitney on site" Barbara Kruger
my personal view on the piece of work is that it is quiet strong and powerful the reason why i think this is because of what word have been chosen for this Pacific work ," YOU ARE NOT WHAT YOU SEEM" this quote has a moral view to it and it relates to the viewer whoever is reading it to make them really think about them selves. I also think this is a unique and creative piece of work ,just because i haven't seen nothing like this done before.
i think the audience would experience this work by relating themselves to what the words and phrases are saying to who ever is viewing this work.
