Research both architectural structures in order to comment on;
-the importance of the design and construction
-significance of the materials
-significance of the designer
-function for which each was built
-function now-has it changed?

The importance of the design and construction

1. The Eiffel Tower was built by engineer Gustave Eiffel in 1889. The design of this building is important because it was the tallest building in the world until 1930. It has been used as a icon status over the many years from movies, advertisement especially. It is the acknowledged as a symbol of Paris, and often even used as a symbol for all of France. The construction of the Eiffel Tower was huge achievement in his career and was said to only stand for twenty years but is still standing to this day.

2. The importance of the Guggenheim Museum is literally the internal and external design of it.The intension they had was for being "to the same quality as its contents, with an equal importance to the artworks it would house." This means it wasn't just a building/museum with art work in it it was a piece of artwork itself. They designed this building with a Computer Aided Three Dimensional Interactive Application, a digital design software.

Significance of the materials

1. The Eiffel Tower was built from wrought iron or in other words puddle iron of the highest quality, it was a higher class of steel. Gustave Eiffel thought that wrought iron was suitable to build the tower because of its affordability, it's flexibility and its strength. It needed to be a material that was very strong and so it could hold up through conditions.

2. The Guggenheim in Bilbao was built using a merging mixture of glass, steel frame and sinuous stone, and titanium. This specific titanium is only half a millimetre thick they used a state of the art digital design program that made it so exclusive. The contrasting shaped exhibit in the museum have all been made up using concrete, with "curved and twisted" walls.

Significance of the designer

1. Eiffel was being founded a company that specialised in "structural metal work" as an engineer. Building construction of the Eiffel tower was the company's biggest achievement. Although Gustave Eiffel's liked structural work his favorite practice was bridge building.

2. Frank Gehry is the principal of the architechture firm Frank O. Gehry and associates. He has won a number of awards for his successful designs. His designs are often out standing and different from other peoples ideas. Which fitted criteria for the Guggenheim quite well and lead him across to be employed to design the museum in Bilbao.

Function for which each was built

1. The Eiffel tower was a big attraction in 1889 as a world fair that was to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the french revolution. The tower was said to stand for only twenty years, but Gustave Eiffel researched and motivated  scientific experiments to extend this, which in other words to keep it standing. Today it is a huge icon in paris, is a tourist attraction and is used for some radio and tv communications.

2. The Guggenheim was built to display art work for the public and the community to see and has stayed the same till today.

Similarities

The Eiffel Tower and the Guggenheim are both big tourist attractions to the world. They both had materials used during the construction that were curvy and made it hard for the designers to achieve but wanted still decided to achieve for its uniqueness.

Differences

The designers for both building were from totally different backgrounds and specialized in different areas. Eiffel was an engineer who specialized in structural work with metal, and Gehry was an architect. Which then showed as an end result. The Eiffel Tower was more planned out, direct and looked a lot more mathematical and the Guggenheim looks although it wasn't it looked sort of unplanned or is a lot more trendy as the structure was built.

Week 6 Landscape and the sublime

        Week 6-Landscape and the Sublime

'Untitled #2" (2002) Richard Misrach

Untitled # 394-03' (2003) Richard Misrach

"What and when was the Enlightenment?

The enlightenment is usually said to of taken place in the 18th centenary and was evolved around the colonies on the western hemisphere such as France, Russia,Great Britain and Germany. The movement and thought that was developed in the time of the Enlightenment were set up, playing a leading role and was influenced on ways of thinking in the west. It then lead to the creation of nature, society and the the man kind itself but most importantly it challenged the original world view which was over-ruled by Christianity.

Define the concept of the Sublime.

Sublime was defined in the 1750's by the statesman of Britain and therapist Edmund Burke. They said life and the feeling of spirit was depending on the universe. Victor Hugo described it as mix of unnatural, distorted and beautiful. Opposed to the way that the bible defined perfection.

How did the concept of the Sublime come out of the Enlightenment thought?

The sublime portrayed the history of holiness, and mix of fear, movement and respect it was terrifying nature and it all lead back to the observation of the Enlightenment.

Discuss the subject matter, and aesthetic (look) of Misrach's work to identify the Sublime in his work. Add some more images of his work.

Battleground Point #8 (1999) Richard Misrach

Swimmers, Pyramid Lake Indiana Reservation, Nevada, 1987-93

White Man Contemplating Pyramids, Egypt, 1989-1991

In Misrach's work he uses a lot of open space and shows various landscapes having small groups people set in the picture or people in a small proportion of the picture. You notice the sublime through the theme of his work as he shows the beauty of the environment in differ to the people who may of featured in the picture especially in pictures one in two Richard Misarch showed the concept of sublime by using the beach and an island with water around it which plays a huge role in nature.

5. Identify some other artists or designers that work with ideas around the Sublime, from the Enlightenment era as well as contemporary artists.

John Constable, View on the Stour near Dedham 1822

6. How does Misrach's photography make you feel? Does it appeal to your imagination?

Before this blog i had never looked at Misarch's art work, ive seen stuff like it but never his and i wouldn't normally look at art under this context but as i started researching him i started to understand and see where he is coming from and how interesting it can be once you see the meaning of his work.

7. Add a Sublime image of your choice to your blog, which can be Art or just a Sublime photograph.

Week 4- The social status of the artist.

Self Portrait in Fur Coat (1500)
Albrecht Durer
Knob (1997) Gavin Turk
Damien Hirst and Maia Norman (1995)

Albrecht Durer's 'Self-Portrait in Fur Coat' (1500) shows a significant change in the way that the artist views and portrays himself.Research the paintings by Albrecht Durer, Gavin Turk and Damien Hirst in order to answer
the following questions;

1. Identify aspects of Durer's self portrait that show a changing view of the artist's view of himself as
an individual.
in Durer's  self portrait there are a number of examples that portraits an artist view of himself as an individual for example he is wearing and alginate fury coat witch would be an expensive valuable to have in the 1500 this shows that he was a wealthy and important man,in the painting he is even painted his portrait touching his  fur on the coat to show his pride in his possessions off ,another aspect in Durer's self portrait that portrays his vanity is his long luscious  curly hair , Durer painted his hair using rich warm colors to portray his appearance as a well off good looking maintained man .

2. Explain how the artist's social status increased during the Renaissance period. Briefly explain why this happened.
in the 14 century the renaissance social status started to evolve when sculpture, architecture and painting formed a group that separated the side of mechanical arts. in the 15 century the knowledge of mathematical perspective,  geometry and anatomy etc was expected by a painter in training .painting and sculpture is on a new basis due  to the start of scientific methods of intellectual, theoretical and the literary . painters and sculptures could now claim that their profession required knowledge and intellectual ability. because of this science became more popular so there for  scientific methods became more in use in art work.

3. Comment on Gavin Turk's work in relation to individualism, status of the artist and egotism.
the meaning of individualism is the habit or principle of being independent and self-reliant. the art work 'knob" by gavin turk's  relates to individualism by the style of this painting .in the painting there is his signature in the center of a blank white canvas in rainbow colors, this relates to being independent and the signature represents himself as an individual .the rainbow colors makes his signature stand out and makes his name well notice this represents his egotism.

4. Comment on Damien Hirst's use of his work and the media for self promotion.
The photo of Daminen Hirst and Maia Norman is quiet and interesting piece .the media of this piece is rather abstract and pretty plain and simple but defiantly effective especially how his wife maia norman is wearing a outfit thats promoting his original piece .

5. Find 2 images of work by artists or designers that reflects some of the ideas of individualism,

De stijl 1917
a group of architects and designers formed a group in the early 1920s they were influenced by some of the  ideas of DADA, they then formed a movement called de stijl which stands for "dutch for the style". The design era of de stijl was self promoted by designers and painters using the de stijl format on a wide range of different products such as shoes, chairs ,lamps to house designs .

6. How do you think artists and designers are viewed in Western society today?
i think today there is not much difference between the renaissance  in how the western society works today ,artist and designers are ether making work because the have a passion for it or ether they are every day consumers who need to produce work to make a living .but how ever it has changed by how people go about there work and how they self promote it ,today artist and designers are getting commission from clients to create artworks. but to get commission from clients you gotta have a good rep and have the qualifications thats the only main difference from the western society till today.

7. Comment on the blogs of other students.

8. Reference the websites and/or books you have used, at the end of your blog.

Week 2- Barbara Kruger & Mercantillism

Barbara Kruger's Art and Design
I shop therefore I am (1987) Barbara Kruger
Face It (Green) 2007 Barbara Kruger

1. Describe the 'style' that Kruger has used in the two presented works.

The style that Barbara kruger has presented in these two designs is mainly
pop art ,but with in these two designs she has used the range of photography and graphic design. it looks as if barbara was going for the 60s pop art look .like most of barbaras work she uses a range of word collage with meaning full quotations, i believe this is how she expresses what she believes in life threw her art work .As you can tell from the text in the work shes quite a feminist artist . booth of the work are simple and dual but just threw the bold words and the black and white pictures you can end up with a very strong peace of work with meaning to it .

2. What are some of the concepts and messages that Kruger is communicating in them?

Consumerism, individual autonomy and desire are her main concepts in these images and the message is to think.
Her concept and message is to get you to question your need or desire to purchase or have ‘things’ and to question how it makes you feel. What does that satisfy both short and long term?
Do you need to purchase consumer goods to feel rich and beautiful? I think the bold message aims to guilt the viewer, which makes them think about their sense of reason.

3. Do these images communicate these ideas effectively? Explain your answer.

The images communicate these ideas clearly because the phrases are bold, direct and concise. They prompt you to question the ideas and your own motives.

4. Define the concept of Mercantillism and explain how these two examples can connect with the concept.
the concept of mercantilism was to "export over import", the purpose for this concept was to build a powerful and wealthy state by putting a limit on importation and to foster the growth of exportation to stimulate the country's  economy .these two examples export and import connect with the theme of consumerism  , which underlies the concept of mercantilism . The text in kruger's work "face it " is agreeing with the concept of mercantilism in how it is implies with the idea of  restricting importation . the txt in face it "this luxurious garment wont make you rich or beautiful " this is also restricting importation and how these things ant really important in every day living .

5. Upload a more recent example of Kruger's work where she has used a new medium, that is not graphic design. Title your image of the chosen work and comment on your response to the work. How do you think the audience would experience this work?
"whitney on site" Barbara Kruger
my personal view on the piece of work is that it is quiet strong and powerful the reason why i think this is because of what word have been chosen for this Pacific work ," YOU ARE NOT WHAT YOU SEEM" this quote has a moral view to it and it relates to the viewer whoever is reading it to make them really think about them selves. I also think this is a unique and creative piece of work ,just because i haven't seen nothing like this done before.
i think the audience would experience this work by relating themselves to what the words and phrases are saying to who ever is viewing this work.
